Work

I'm Burney Waring and I'm the instructor for Production Engineering in Shell Oil Company. Production Engineering involves getting the crude oil and gas out of the ground and sending it to be processed, eventually into something useful.

The production of oil and gas falls into two categories:
- the fluids want to come out of the ground very badly and we have to work very hard to keep them safely under control.
- the fluids do not want to come out of the ground and we have to work very hard to coax the to the surface.
The proper conclusion to draw from this is that Production Engineers work very hard!

Although I have been involved in both categories of production over the last 15 years with Shell (starting in the Gulf of Mexico and then onshore Louisiana) lately I have been working more on the second one. Artificial Lift is a family of techniques used to boost low pressure production out of the ground. This is increasingly necessary as our reservoirs age. Shell produces over 1 million barrels per day of oil using various Arificial Lift techniques and we are currently developing and implementing new tools and techniques in this area
